Graham Kirk

Graham Kirk arrived on Friday morning at 11:08 am at a hearty 8 pounds and 10 ounces, 20.5 inches. After checking into the hospital Thursday evening with regular contractions, we ended up having to kick-start my labor with Pitocin around 3 am (don't worry, I caught some solid sleep from 10 pm on). Once my doctor broke my water at 8 am, things quickly accelerated (as did the pain!) and we were pushing by 10.  Dave was fantastic throughout, as were the nurses -- all in all, much less scary than I expected.

We got back home last night and it's definitely been an adjustment to our schedules and our lives. Family and friends have been fantastic though, cooking and cleaning and changing diapers while I work on nursing and healing (unfortunately, I lost a significant amount of blood so I'm working on getting my strength back as well). I'll be taking a few weeks off from blogging while we adjust to this new addition to the family.

Many thanks for all the well wishes late last week! Y'all definitely gave me the extra encouragement I needed to get through the last few days.

Well DONE! Congratulations to all of you!

And Averill, I lost a lot of blood (half of it, apparently) when my daughter was born. Two things no one mentioned: All the iron you are about to consume is, uh, extremely constipating. Make appropriate dietary adjustments to avoid that particular misery.

And significant blood loss = exhaustion for quite awhile. It actually took me much longer to recover from my daughter's VBAC birth than from her brothers' arrival by c-section three years earlier. I bounced right back from the c-section, but the loss of blood the next time really threw me for a loop - and I was incredibly confused and unhappy that I wasn't out walking all over the place for maybe a couple of months.

Maybe someone has prepared you better already than anyone did me, but in case they haven't - I hope you will be very gentle and kind to yourself as you regain strength. Once it's back, you'll feel fine -- what a good time you're going to have with him!

OH! Big beautiful boy! Congratulations - he's beautiful.

No one talks that much about the healing part. Maybe it's worse with bigger babies? Oliver was nine pounds and I sat on a bag of frozen peas for days. But you'll heal quickly and whatever pain you were previously experiencing will just - poof! - go away.

It's exhausting though. Your whole world gets turned upside down and some days you may feel like you're crying more than the baby. It's all normal.

And that little face makes everything worth it. Enjoy falling in love!

You made my day ~ I'm beyond thrilled to see Mr. Graham's sweet face and know you both are doing well. He is absolutely beautiful and I'm of course loving his name. I can't wait to tell my Graham that there's a new wee-Graham living just down the road! I hope you get stronger each day and again, he's such a precious baby. Congratulations to you, Dave and to the grandparents. Nothing will make you happier than raising that bundle of sweet boy.

Congratulations, Averill! What wonderful, exciting news. So glad Graham arrived safely and mother and son are doing well!

Can't wait to see how your life goes in new and exciting directions.

P.S. - I might have written this in the past, but a wise woman once told me 'the days are long, but the years are short'. I remember those nights, when it seemed impossible to get a solid hour of sleep....my oldest turned 13 today, and it really has passed like the blink of an eye!
