Mood Board Monday

Antwerp Chair, spectrum swirl (Anthropologie; $1698)

Today brings a second installment of Mood Board Monday (this time hosted by the lovely Tracy of Comfort & Luxury). This week's challenge is to design a room around one of two Anthropologie chairs (I chose the Antwerp chair pictured above for its colorful paisley pattern and lovely traditional shape). I decided that, while a chair like this certainly deserves to be the star of the show, it also needs pieces that can stand up to it a bit -- items and fixtures that could balance all of this fabulousness with a bit of...gravitas, shall we say?

When I think about rooms with some weight (both literally and figuratively), I think of a masculine study or library, complete with dark walls, old leather and brass fixtures -- the kind of room that wouldn't be out of place in Sterling Memorial Library or an equally venerable, equally stodgy institution. So what would happen if that sort of room were introduced to a chair such as this? Suddenly, a masculine study would take on a more modern, more colorful personality. A little bit traditional, a little bit eclectic bohemian...and a little bit subversive.

Something along the lines of this:

Miles Redd

But with a dash of the New York Public Library thrown in for good measure.

With this inspiration as a touchstone, I've thrown together the following mood board:

Source list: 1. Paint Color: Slate Teal from Benjamin Moore. 2. Antique Maps from V&J Duncan (Eastern Hemisphere, ca. 1835 ($85) and England & Scotland, c. 1732 ($375)). 3. Adjustable Floor Lamp from Circa Lighting ($315). 4. NY Public Library table lamp from Circa Lighting ($420). 5. Portuguese Desk from Restoration Hardware ($1495). 6. Paisley Pillows from Anthropologie ($98-$115). 7. Conrad Sofa from Jayson Home & Garden ($5,495). 8. Paisley Rug in Ivory from Madelaine Weinrib.

Be sure to check out all the other wonderful mood boards inspired by this fabulous chair HERE.

Great..great room you created. You showed one of my all time favorite rooms by my love - Miles. I have yet to re-do our office & keep putting it off. There are so many beautiful inspirations that I can't seem to finalize a plan. Those navy lacquered walls however inspire me greatly.
I think you should leave law & delve into the world of design Ms. Averill!

Great job, Averill! Love the heavy woods and leather sofa with all those curvy, colorful paisleys. Your inspiration photos really help tell the story too (love that Redd room). Thanks for playing!

Unexpected direction to take with this chair! I think a room put together from your selections would end up being very successful, I like the interesting mix of styles and the bit of copper thrown in through the lamps.

Oooh, this room is amazing!!!! Totally not something I would have expected from this chair. Awesome. That rug is so perfect, it echos the shape of the paisley without being over the top and sets a nice neutral backdrop for the rest of the space. Ooh, I have such a thing for maps...so glad you included them. Great work!!!! Glad I found your blog through this too;)

I like how unexpected this is and you did a beautiful job with it! Love the way the paisley is repeated in the rug, too.

Oh I just love your room and your first inspiration room - just gorgeous, both of them. Those paisley throw pillows are awesome, and that english leather sofa is screaming for long weekend naps! Great room Averill!

I would love to get my read on in a library featuring this chair! It was so fun to read Karen's glam version of the chair and then your more serious but equally as interesting version. Fun!

What a great design. I am usually drawn to more masculine spaces myself. This would make the perfect library. I love paisley and your use of it in different ways is wonderful.

I love that desk- can't wait til I have an office (either at home or if/when I make partner to put it in). The chair reminds me of the embroidery in Hungary and eastern Europe- very cool!

I'm a day late, I just discovered this Monday thing but I must tell you, I love your room! It's so pretty to me. I'm thinking some of the pieces you chose have a place in my house. I love the chair, so cute and the desk, drooling, the bookcase; loving restoration hardware these days.

Great job.

How awesome Averill! The selections definitely exudes a classy home library. The paisley patterns are so muted yet gives it some playfulness. I can imagine sky high luxurious drapes & wide plank wooden floors.
